New Nissan V8 Supercar for Sydney this weekend

Nissan's new Altima V8 Supercar to scorch Sydney Olympic Park street circuit from today

Nissan will give its new-for-2013 Altima V8 Supercar its first public outing at this weekend’s final round of the 2012 championship, the Sydney Telstra 500.

The all-new touring car will be on display in the V8 Supercar pit pavilion from today, and will hit the Homebush street circuit on Sunday at 11:10am.

Nissan revealed its challenger to Ford, Holden and Mercedes-Benz in next year’s V8 Supercar championship in October, and since then Rick Kelly has undertaken shakedown testing at Calder Park raceway.

But Kelly’s demonstration outing at the 3.43km Sydney circuit on Sunday will be the first time the Nissan touring car – which is designed to promote the road-going Altima sedan to be launched here later next year – has been driven in public.

The 2006 V8 Supercar champion and two-time Bathurst winner, who has defected from the Holden Racing Team to Nissan Motorsport, said he was looking forward to driving the Altima racer in public for the first time.

“The interest in the Nissan Altima V8 Supercar has been overwhelming all year, especially now that we have unveiled the first car,” said Kelly.

“So we are pleased to show fans our first Nissan Altima V8 Supercar, the car that will dawn the new era of V8 Supercars from 2013, at the final event of this season at the Sydney Telstra 500 this weekend.

“While I’m sure that the fans will be excited to see the Altima in the flesh for the first time, there’s no doubt that the most excited person to hear this news confirmed is actually me.

“I’ve been busting to get my first drive of the new Nissan all year long as we’ve been watching the car take shape in the various departments of our team workshop. So to get the chance to drive the Altima V8 Supercar in front of a crowd at the Sydney Olympic Park street circuit is going to be a fantastic buzz.”

Ford has also announced its new 2013 Ford Performance Racing Falcon will also be on display in Sydney this weekend.

Redesigned versions of the Falcon and Commodore V8 Supercars – built to new Car of the Future regulations in force from next year – will do battle with the Altima and E63 AMG-based touring cars in the 2013 series, which kicks off at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide on March 2.
