Holden is to get a new boss. The announcement, made just minutes ago, says the popular Holden boss will commence a new Detroit-based role as Vice President, Global Vehicle Systems and Integration, effective August 1.
Mooney has been GM Holden's chairman and managing director since January 2004. He also held positions as head of GM Asia Pacific Engineering, a board member of GM Daewoo in Korea, and sat on GM's Asia Pacific strategy board.
Mooney will be replaced by GM Shanghai Executive VP, Chris Gubbey.
Prior to joining Shanghai GM in 2000, Gubbey was manufacturing director and a member of the board of directors of Vauxhall. He has also held senior roles with Hardy Spicer and Toyota UK.
Shanghai GM is a 50/50 joint venture of General Motors and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp Group (SAIC). It offers a range of vehicles under the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Saab nameplates in China where it is currently the number one auto brand and the first automaker to sell more than 400,000 vehicles in a calendar year.
Mooney and Gubbey's appointments are among a series of changes announced today by GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner.
Mooney is expected to hold a press conference later this afternoon.
