New Ford Puma small SUV teased

Blue Oval revives name once used for small coupe with an SUV set to battle the Nissan JUKE

A new Fiesta-based Ford Puma SUV will be launched in the second half of 2019, it has been revealed.

Instead of replacing the EcoSport, the new Ford Puma is set to be sold alongside the slow-selling SUV, marketed as a sportier, more stylish alternative.

That much is clear from looking at our spy shots and a new teaser from Ford, which together reveal a side profile that's more closely related to the Fiesta and Focus.

Created to be a more viable rival to the Nissan JUKE, inside the Puma will get a Focus-inspired interior utilising the car-maker's latest dash-mounted SYNC touchscreen infotainment system.

It will also offer a large 456-litre boot and more interior space than the existing EcoSport.

Despite placing the driver higher, engineers are rumoured to have targeted the Fiesta's class-leading dynamics in the SUV.

Under the bonnet, the Puma will be offered with a new 115kW mild hybrid version of the car-maker's current 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo Ecoboost engine. It uses a 48-volt belt-driven starter generator that helps lower fuel consumption to 5.4L/100km.

Built at Ford's Craiova plant in Romania, it's not yet been confirmed whether the small Ford Puma will be offered Down Under when it goes on sale in Europe towards the end of this year.
