Pricing and specification for the highly-anticipated second-generation Subaru BRZ sports car is still being kept under wraps, but that has not stopped Subaru Australia from kicking off its sales campaign with an expression-of-interest registration system on its official website.
With only a few dozen examples of the current-generation Subaru BRZ coupe remaining in showrooms, there will be a supply void for several months once stock is exhausted, given the new and more powerful 170kW model is not due to roll into showrooms until November 2021.
However, it will give the 2021 Subaru BRZ a head start over its ‘twin under the skin’ Toyota GR 86, which won’t arrive in Australia until early 2022.
The ‘register your interest’ sign-up for the new BRZ will help Subaru gauge initial levels of customer demand, which in turn will be relayed to the factory in Japan.
However, the first batch is highly likely to sell out quickly.
carsales understands that some Subaru dealers have already taken deposits for the new model, despite no official pricing yet, such is the interest in the new-look Subaru BRZ.
“We’ve been staggered by the amount of interest in new BRZ,” said Subaru Australia general manager, Blair Read.
“The level of dealer enquiry and calls to our own customer service centre indicates massive interest among sports car fans and we look forward to sharing more details closer to launch.”
It’s understood that registering interest does not guarantee individuals a car nor will it put potential buyers at the front of the queue. It is designed to provide details and information for eager buyers.
Powered by a bigger, more potent 2.4-litre four-cylinder boxer engine (170kW/249Nm), the second-gen Subaru BRZ will be faster, more agile and come with significantly improved technology.
The rear-drive coupe will also be more expensive this time around, pushing up from the current model that’s priced between $35,270 and $41,190 plus on-road costs.
Offered with six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions, the new BRZ will accelerate from 0-100km/h in around 6.3 seconds, slashing more than a second off the current model’s 7.4sec time.
The 2021 Subaru BRZ also gets a new-look interior, with a new 8.0-inch multimedia infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.
There’s also a 7.0-inch TFT and LCD cluster, contoured sports seats with extended side bolsters in the cabin, while driver assistance tech includes Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite comprising pre-collision braking and adaptive cruise control – but only with on models with the automatic transmission.
As is currently the case with all Subaru vehicles, the new BRZ will be available for purchase in dealerships or online through the Subaru website.
