The Australian Infinite Dial study is commissioned by Commercial Radio Australia, Southern Cross Austereo and Triton Digital and surveyed 1000 Aussies during the first quarter of 2021 about what they listen to and where following the disruptions from COVID-19.
AM/FM/DAB+ live radio (including catch-up podcasts) appears to be the go-to audio of choice with in-car listeners in Australia with 84% of those who have driven or ridden in a car in the last month having tuned in.
41% of people say that they prefer to listen to their own music collection instead while 39% use online audio streaming services. In the last week, 42% have listened to Spotify, 16% to YouTube music, 8% to Apple Music, 5% to SoundCloud and 1% to Amazon Music.
Podcasts are also rapidly growing in popularity in Australia with 30% of us listening to them in the car which is up from 14% in 2020. An average of five podcasts is consumed per week by Aussies.
