New Tesla Supercharger for east coast

Recharging facility at Port Macquarie promises eventual Sydney to Brisbane link for EVs

A large swathe of the Australian east coast will open up to Tesla owners as plans for a new Supercharger station in Port Macquarie unfold.

The new facility is part of the company's plan for 2016 to connect Sydney and Brisbane, and has been approved by local authorities.

Following the recent installation of Supercharger facilities on the NSW/Victoria border the new facility will enable Tesla owners to travel seamlessly between Melbourne and Byron Bay.

To be located off the Pacific highway at Cassegrain Winery in Port Macquarie, the Supercharger station will allow as many as six units of Tesla Model S at a time. A 30-minute charge will extend range by as much as 270km, or about three hours of travel.

As with the Supercharger stations already established on the Hume highway in Goulburn, NSW, and Wodonga in Victoria, the new facilities will provide the service free to Tesla owners.

The Tesla network is expanding worldwide. The most recent updates put a figure of 591 Supercharger stations up and running internationally, with more than 3425 Superchargers operational across the globe since the technology was announced in 2012.

The plan, according to Tesla, is to have Supercharger stations "strategically placed to allow owners to drive from station to station with minimal stops. Stations are located near amenities like roadside diners, cafes, and shopping centres so road trippers can stop for a quick meal and have their Model S charged by the time they're done."

Despite early scepticism, Tesla has so far delivered more than 90,000 electric vehicles, including the highly-regarded Model S, to customers around the world.
