Toyota Aygo X baby SUV revealed

Tiny city car gets butch styling, raised ride height and stretched wheelbase to cash in on global demand for SUVs

Toyota has revealed the all-new baby SUV replacement for its Aygo city car that's called the Toyota Aygo X.

Abandoning the joint-venture program with PSA Group that had also spawned the Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1, the new 2022 Toyota Aygo X sees the Japanese brand go it alone with its smallest and most affordable SUV.

Switching to Toyota's TNGA-B architecture that also underpins both the Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross, the new Aygo X is bigger all-round than the light car it replaces.

Heavily inspired by the Toyota Aygo X Prologue revealed earlier this year, the production model measures in at 3700mm long – a considerable 235mm more than the outgoing car, but just 10mm longer than the Kia Picanto.

Capitalising on the move from humble hatchbacks to SUVs, the latest Aygo X gets a raised driving position (55mm higher) and typical rugged SUV design cues that include plastic wheel-arch cladding and large wheels – with 17-inch rims standard and larger 18s available as an option.

Liberating more space, the wheelbase grows by 90mm, while the width increases by 12mm, boosting shoulder-room by around 45mm.

Boot space is also better at 231 litres – 60 litres more than before, and that figure can be increased to 829L if you fold the second row of seats flat.

Under the bonnet is a small 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine that produces 53kW and 93Nm of torque. It combines with either a manual transmission or a CVT automatic.

The lack of power is reflected in the 0-100km/h time of 15.6 seconds, although the Aygo X can average 4.7L/100km.

Inside, there's a 9.0-inch infotainment system that works with either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and features over-the-air updates and cloud-based navigation.

A small screen within the instrument cluster is also present, plus a multifunction steering wheel. Wireless charging and a powerful sound system that includes a 300W amp and 200mm subwoofer is also available.

As standard, all models get the Toyota Safety Sense suite that features autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with cyclist detection. Lane keep assist and an adaptive cruise control is also available.

Options include two-tone colours and a retractable canvas roof.

On sale in Europe from early 2022, prices have not been announced but it's thought the Aygo X will be available from around $A25,000 in markets like the UK.

Despite its new SUV design, it's almost certain the Aygo will again be ruled out for Australia due to concerns over high pricing for our market and the limited demand for tiny hatchbacks.
