The new 2024 Toyota GR 86 40th Anniversary Limited has been unleashed in Japan, celebrating four decades since the original AE86 first went on sale.
Said to be based on the recent Toyota GR 86 Trueno Edition for North America and limited to just 200 units in Japan, the Toyota GR 86 40th Anniversary Limited comes with a set of new higher-performing ZF Sachs dampers and a ventilated disc brake upgrade from Brembo.
Based on Japan’s highest-spec GR 86 RZ, the anniversary coupe also comes with black ‘since 1983’ and ‘40th’ decals on the doors. These are also repeated inside on the door cards and floor mats.
The car is available in white or red body colour, while exterior flourishes include a black-painted ducktail spoiler and 18-inch rims that are finished in dark metallic grey instead of matte black.
Inside, there’s a black theme with garish flashes of red, as seen on the seats.
As part of model year 2024 updates, the special GR 86 and the rest of the range now come with Subaru’s upgraded EyeSight safety system with autonomous emergency braking (AEB) for manual versions. These updates are already locked in for the related BRZ.
Finally, the stability control has been recalibrated and throttle response improved.
Under the bonnet, the naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre four-cylinder carries over unchanged, producing the same 174kW and 250Nm as the stock GR 86.
This is a Japan-only model, but the upgrades could be replicated in similar fashion for an Australian-market special-edition.
