New Toyota GR Supra revealed with manual gearbox

Toyota has revealed its upgraded 2022 Toyota GR Supra, providing first details of the new six-speed manual gearbox option announced earlier this month as well as a raft of other changes for the flagship sports car.

Arriving in Australia in the final quarter of this year, the updated Toyota GR Supra will offer the new six-speed manual gearbox on both GT and GTS models, while the two model grades – regardless of transmission – will offer “enhanced ride and handling” courtesy of retuned suspension and steering.

There’s also new 19-inch forged alloy wheels for GTS – shaving off a combined 4.8kg of unsprung mass – and fresh colour options inside and out.

Most attention is, however, focused on the centre console and the driver’s footwell, where the long-awaited manual gearshift (with spherical knob) and third pedal now appear on the Toyota Supra, joining the eight-speed automatic and combining with the BMW-sourced 285kW/500Nm 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine.

Toyota hasn’t yet published performance claims for the three-pedal set-up, but it most definitely lays the groundwork for an even more tantalising battle with the inbound 2022 Nissan Z which will also be available with a six-speed DIY transmission.

According to Toyota Australia marketing and franchise operations vice-president Sean Hanley, the addition of the manual ’box – described as an intelligent transmission that can match engine speeds on both up and down shifts – would combine with the chassis tweaks to further underline the Supra’s identity as a “pure sports car”.

“When Toyota first launched the reborn GR Supra in September 2019, we drew from our experience in motorsport to deliver a pure sports car that delighted fans of the iconic nameplate across the globe,” he said.

“But we always knew there were those that wanted an even more engaging drive experience and now we are able to provide that with a new six-speed manual gearbox available across the range and a suspension and steering retune to provide even more dynamic handling.”

In terms of the Supra’s dynamics, Toyota says its engineers have “further refined the steering and suspension with modified stabiliser bushings and retuned adaptive variable suspension and other chassis control systems to improve handling performance and ride comfort”.

As well as being stronger and lighter, the new 19-inch forged alloy wheels on GTS models have revised spoke and cross-sectional shapes and a premium Titanium Dark Silver finish.

Across the range, three new metallic body colours will be offered – Volcanic Ash Grey, Dawn Blue and Avalanche White – while the cabin will be available with a tan trim option.

Pricing and further details of the updated 2022 Toyota GR Supra will be confirmed closer to its Australian launch.
