New variants drive VW Golf range

More gear for no extra cost sharpens Golf game

Volkswagen has added two new variants to its Golf range aimed at attracting showroom traffic via the addition of no extra cost equipment.

The two new models are the "Edition", which is based on the entry-level Trendline range, and the Comfortline-based "Pacific".

Tagged at the same prices as regular Trendline equivalents, the Edition version is available in 1.6-litre petrol form with five-speed manual or six-speed Tiptronic transmission, or as a 1.9 TDI with either six-speed manual or six-speed DSG transmission.

The added gear on Edition Golfs includes 15-inch "Bristol" alloys, eight-speaker radio/MP3 compatible CD player sound system, trip computer, height and lumbar adjustable front seats, multifunction leather steering wheel and various titillations including anthracite grey cloth trim, leather shift knob and handbrake lever, matt chrome inserts on dash and doors, and body coloured exterior mirrors, door handles and side protector strips.

The Edition also gets the electronic stabilisation program (ESP) that is now standard across the Golf range.

The Pacific adds to regular Comfortline equipment and is available in 2.0-litre FSI with six-speed manual or Tiptronic transmissions, or as a 2.0 TDI with six-speed manual or DSG transmissions at the same prices as regular Comfortline equivalents.

Additional equipment on Pacific models includes 16-inch "Mugello" alloy wheels, dual-zone climate-control, front sports seats with anthracite sports trim and VW's large-format trip computer "Plus".

Both Edition and Pacific Golfs are identified by badges on the rear hatch lid.

The current generation Golf was introduced here in 2004. A new, sixth generation model is due to be launched in Europe later this year, which suggests an Australian introduction during the first half of 2009.

1.6 Edition six-speed Tiptronic $27,790
1.9 TDI Edition six-speed manual $27,990
