New Volkswagen Amarok body teased again

With just a week left until the all-new 2022 Volkswagen Amarok is officially unveiled, the German brand is continuing to issue teaser images and video clips of its new-generation 4x4 pick-up that’s based on the Australian-developed Ford Ranger.

This time, the front wings and wheels are featured in a pair of short and sharp videos, revealing a chiselled and muscular wheel-arch as well as a new machine-finished hexagonal six-spoke alloy wheel design wrapped in Dunlop Grandtrek AT22 rubber.

The wheel’s machine finish and what looks to be a 17-inch dual-purpose tyre suggests the model being teased is a high-end Amarok similar to the 2022 Ford Ranger Sport, with the black door decal adding more weight to the theory.

While technically sold as all-terrains, Dunlop AT22s are at the subdued end of the expansive A/T spectrum in terms of their tread pattern and aggression, but Volkswagen is nonetheless gung-ho about the virtues of more capable rubber.

“The pick-up will for the first time depending on model also be sold ex-factory with all-terrain tyres,” the company said in a statement.

“Nothing thus stands in the way of the new Amarok immediately going off-road, driving along unmade tracks or around a construction site.”

It’s common practice for mid- and high-series utes to come from the factory wearing more road-biased tyres on the basis of that’s where they’ll typically spend most of their time, with the occasional foray off the beaten track.

For reference, the Toyota HiLux SR5, Isuzu D-MAX LS-U and X-Terrain and Mazda BT-50 XTR, GT, SP and even the Thunder all ship as standard with 18-inch Bridgestone Dueler H/T tyres.

Other brands like Mitsubishi spec Dunlop and Toyo rubber, but the trend is still largely the same.

The 2022 Volkswagen Amarok will be officially unveiled on July 7 ahead of an Australian launch early next year.
