New Volkswagen Amarok cabin previewed

Huge portrait-mounted infotainment screen to operate up to 30 driver assist features for new VW ute

The all-new 2023 Volkswagen Amarok will come equipped with a huge 12-inch infotainment screen that has been previewed ahead of the ute’s Australian launch early next year.

Releasing a short video on its official Twitter account, the German car-maker has shown off the large one-piece glass screen and in the process confirmed the 2023 Amarok Volkswagen will get an identical infotainment system and dash architecture as the latest Ford Ranger upon which it is based.

As per the Ford Ranger, a smaller 10.1-inch system will also be offered.

Below the large expanse of glass is a traditional volume control as well as five other toggles, with one thought to be a shortcut for the temperature for the climate control.

Instead of using a Volkswagen operating system, the Amarok is expected to run a reskinned version of Ford’s SYNC4 OS. That means it will be capable of over-the-air updates and should twin with an app that will offer new features like remote start.

Joining the big infotainment system will be a fully digital instrument cluster with both an 8.0- and 12.4-inch display set to be available.

Previous teasers have revealed how the Ford Ranger-based Volkswagen Amarok will sport a tougher look and come with a range-topping V6 version that’s set to pump out a respectable 184kW and 600Nm of torque from its new Ford-sourced 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6.

As well as the new V6 oil-burner, the VW ute should be offered in Australia with the Blue Oval’s 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine.

Both engines will come standard with Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission.

Up front, we also know from a shadowy teaser released in late May that the new Amarok will sport a pair of high-tech headlights that incorporate C-shaped LED elements within them and will include VW’s IQ.Light matrix technology.

For those who’ll use the Amarok for work, VW says the new pick-up’s tougher styling will be reflected in its increased capability.

The payload, for example, will increase to 1200kg while more powertrains will feature its class-best 3500kg towing capability.

Safety will take a significant leap forward too. The Amarok will gain full-length side curtain airbags, a centre airbag, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and a more sophisticated autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system.
