Volkswagen has continued its drip-feed approach to revealing its all-new 2023 Volkswagen Amarok, this time releasing some “near-production sketches” of its second-generation ute based on the new Ford Ranger.
Showcasing a “dynamic, self-assured” design, these new sketches confirm the new Volkswagen Amarok will look quite different to the Australian-developed Ford on which it’s based.
We already know from previous teasers that the VW’s front-end design will vary considerably from the Ranger’s butch Americanised look, but the roofline, doors and glasshouse of the cab looks virtually unchanged from the Ranger.
However, the Amarok’s front and rear quarter guards feature deep creases not seen on the Ranger, accentuating the heavily blistered wheel-arches, and there’s also a huge stylised sailplane sports bar on the dual-cab sketched here.
“The styling bar as a visual extension of the double cab in the cargo box once again gives the Amarok’s body dynamic, aerodynamic and very strong proportions,” said Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles design boss Albert-Johann Kirzinger.
Like at the front, the Amarok’s rear-end differs considerably from the Ranger’s, with completely different tail-light and tailgate designs, although the German ute will retain the Ford’s bold model lettering.
“We emphasise the different, expressive front designs of our pick-up with a charismatic Amarok signature that is also found with very large letters on the cargo box at the rear and is sported very proudly by the Amarok,” Kirzinger said.
Like the new Ranger, which has a broader track than before, the next Amarok will be considerably bigger than the model it replaces and will once again be available with a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6, although this time it won’t be VW’s own.
