New Volkswagen Golf R set for November 4 reveal

More power and tech for new performance flagship version of Golf Mk8 range

Just days after the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport was revealed online, VW has confirmed it will pull the drapes off the production Volkswagen Golf R on November 4.

Teased on Volkswagen R's official Instagram account, the model that is set to be the quickest Golf hot hatch ever was originally scheduled to be unveiled in July before the COVID-19 pandemic scuttled those plans.

Despite the big wait, the flagship R based on the new Mk8 Volkswagen Golf has been spotted, almost completely undisguised, at one of Volkswagen's test facilities in Austria.

That's why we know that in addition to the front light bar seen in the official teaser, the 2021 Volkswagen Golf R will get a new front bumper that features three large air intakes channelling cooling air to the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine.

Notably, these are far more subtle than the Golf GTI and GTI Clubsport's front-end design.

Featuring large 19-inch wheels and side skirts, the under-the-radar hot hatch's looks are almost completely undone by the tailgate's huge rear spoiler and an all-new bumper that sports an equally imposing diffuser.

As well as its styling, another security breach revealed the Golf R should pump out 245kW and get 420Nm of torque – a huge boost over the 213kW/380Nm the current-gen musters.

Set to be available as both a hatch and a wagon, the new Volkswagen Golf R should be capable of a 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.4 seconds and a limited top speed of 250km/h.

Like before, the small Golf R will come standard with VW's 4MOTION all-wheel drive and be combined with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. There's no word if the six-speed manual version will live on.

Inside, the Golf R's cabin is dominated by a pair of sporty supportive bucket seats and the regular Mk8 Golf's huge centrally-mounted infotainment system.

European deliveries will begin in early 2021, around the same time the Golf GTI arrives Down Under.
