A handful of purportedly official sketches of the second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan have been published by German outlet Auto Motor und Sport.
The drawings have been published ahead of the 2016 Tiguan's debut at the Frankfurt motor show tomorrow.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan's specifications are not yet clear, though it is expected to grow in length and will rival vehicles like the top-selling Mazda CX-5 in Australia.
Based on the MQB vehicle architecture that underpins vehicles such as the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3, the new Tiguan will be offered in all- and front-wheel drive, as is currently the case.
A Volkswagen source in Germany told motoring.com.au: "There may be SUV developments from Volkswagen at the Frankfurt motor show," but wouldn't be drawn on specifics, although the VW insider all but confirmed the Tiguan's world debut this week with a Facebook teaser image last week.
"The Volkswagen Tiguan is an extremely important vehicle for the brand and we look forward to seeing the new model," said the VW employee.
The German website that first posted the sketches reckons it will have more boot space than currently and will be offered with a range of engines, from a 92kW 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine to a range-topping 176kW 2.0-litre engine, which we've just tested in the new Passat Alltrack, while a plug-in hybrid version is also expected.
Volkswagen will grow the Tiguan family to include two further derivatives – a stretched version of the SUV with seven seats and a sporty 'coupe' version to satisfy the growing demand for stylised SUVs.
The new Tiguan is confirmed for release late next year in Australia – where the current Tiguan starts at $28,990 – followed by both other versions in 2017.
