New Volkswagen Tiguan set for 2024 Australian launch

Third-generation VW Tiguan mid-size SUV to bring fresh look, more tech and new powertrains

VW Australia expects the new 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan to go on sale here in the second half of next year, not too long after the third generation of the popular mid-size SUV hits Europe.

“We’re looking at the back end of next year for its arrival, in Q3 or Q4 2024,” a Volkswagen Group Australia spokesperson told carsales.

VW is expected to officially unveil the new-generation Volkswagen Tiguan later this year, ahead of first European deliveries early in 2024.

We’ve already seen how the all-important medium SUV is shaping up, courtesy of recent spy pics out of the US and an earlier set that showed the next Tiguan testing in the Austrian alps.

Appearing larger than the current model courtesy of a bigger, bluffer, Volkswagen Touareg-style front-end, the new Tiguan’s full-width lower front grille is chunkier than before and is joined by a much slimmer upper grille.

The rear-end design of the new Tiguan is closer to the current model, although new LED tail-lights will modernise its rump in concert with a resculpted bumper.

Official details are still to be released, but expect to see petrol, diesel and electrified powertrains under the chunkier SUV’s bonnet, most of which can be expected to come to Australia.

Volkswagen Australia has already stated it wants to bring the plug-in hybrid Tiguan GTE to the local market this year.

Popular high-performance Tiguan R versions are also set to return in the third generation, blending hot hatch performance and premium equipment levels with mid-size SUV practicality.

Inside, the new Tiguan is likely to borrow heavily from its all-electric Volkswagen ID.4 SUV sibling, with a cleaner, minimalist cabin layout featuring upmarket materials and twin LED screens.

After a round of price hikes earlier this year, the current Tiguan range starts at $42,490 plus on-road costs for the 110TSI petrol model, climbing all the way up to $70,490 plus ORCs for the hot Tiguan R.

Volkswagen Australia is confident the current model and the incoming new-generation Tiguan will continue to be one of its most popular cars, despite being hampered by limited supplies that have caused long customer waiting times and reduced the SUV’s sales by 30 per cent last year.

“The second-generation Tiguan is a mainstay of the Volkswagen passenger vehicle range but we’ve never had full and constant supply of it,” the VW spokesperson told carsales.

“When we first launched it we didn’t have the 162TSI for six months and when that came along it rapidly became more ordered and more waited for than when the Mk5 Golf GTI first came on the waiting list.

“It’s crucial to us – Tiguan and T-Roc are the mainstays in terms of passenger vehicles.”

To the end of April this year, the Tiguan stands as the second-best seller in the German brand’s range with 2233 sales – marginally behind the T-Roc small SUV’s 2410 units – although the seven-seat Tiguan Allspace adds another 1534 to that tally.
