New WRX STI shatters lap record in Germany
Subaru breaks own Nürburgring record by four secondsSubaru has set itself a new record at Germany's famous Nürburgring, posting an über-quick lap time of 7min:55 in a 2011MY Subaru Impreza WRX STI sedan. Piloted by four-time World Rally Champion Tommi Mäkinen (pictured), the lap time shatters Subaru's previous 2004 record by a full four seconds.
Subaru has used the famed Nordschleife, Germany's course for advanced research and development projects since 1992, including the testing of all its Impreza WRX and WRX STI models. The video demonstrates not only the impressive pace required to lock-in such a rapid time, but also the precise dynamics and focused driving control crucial to lapping the 'Ring at such a brutal pace.
Subaru says the concept of the "fastest WRX STI ever" means more than just top speed or engine output, and that driving with confidence is pivotal to the WRX experience. With that in mind, many of the changes made to the 2011MY WRX STI focus on chassis alterations and suspension set-up.
"The car was controllable with precise and faithful handling, even on tricky corners," commented Mäkinen. "I could easily predict the car's behaviour."

The new 2011MY WRX STI sedan will go on sale globally from the end of this quarter with upgrades due to be carried over to the hatchback soon after.
