Dodge has ended its drawn-out teaser campaign for the Challenger SRT Demon by revealing full details and images of the street-legal drag racer – and the numbers are even more incredible than expected.
Revealed in the Big Apple ahead of its world debut at the New York motor show tomorrow, the Demon is claimed to be the world's quickest and most powerful rear-wheel drive production car ever.
That's because it packs a whopping 626kW (840hp) from a development of the Hellcat's supercharged 6.2-litre V8 – enough to propel it to 100km/h in sizzling 2.3 seconds and over the standing-quarter in just 9.65sec.
Dodge also claims that, thanks to its new ‘torque reserve launch system’, the Demon can lift its front wheels off the deck for three feet after take-off, and deliver 1.8g of initial acceleration – the highest ever for a road-legal production car.
Other motorsport technologies fitted to the Demon, which won't be produced in right-hand drive and therefore won't be available in Australia, include the new 'Air-Grabber' -- claimed to be largest cold air intake ever installed in a production car.
Key to the Demon's pace is a larger 2.7-litre-per-rev supercharger, increased boost pressure of 14.5 psi, higher 650rpm rev-limit, the SRT Power Chiller liquid-to-air intercooler and TransBrake launch control function. Oh, and its 100kg lower kerb weight, thanks in part to a stripped-out two-seat interior.
Despite the extra power, Dodge says the Demon is the first ever factory-production car designed to run on 100+ high-octane unleaded fuel or standard 91 octane on demand.
What's more, it's covered by FCA US LLC's factory warranty, including three-year/36,000-mile limited vehicle warranty and five-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain coverage.
Production of the limited-edition 2018 Challenger SRT Demon begins by August, and just 3300 will be built for North America and Canada this year, with all customers receiving a full-day session at the Bob Bondurant School of High-performance Driving.
