Korea's first luxury car brand, Genesis, has provided a preview of its third model, a four-door sedan dubbed 'New York Concept'.
Set to make its debut at the New York motor show in Manhattan later this month, the concept will provide a foretaste as to how Genesis – Hyundai's luxury car offshoot – will craft the exteriors of its vehicles, and follows in the footsteps of the Genesis G90 model, roughly the size of a Benz S-Class or BMW 7 Series.
The Korean brand isn't saying much about the Genesis New York Concept besides 'watch this space', but the new model could be a preview of its new medium-sized Genesis G70 model. This would logically compete in the same space as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Lexus IS.
The production version of the Genesis New York Concept will be a rear-drive vehicle like the G80 (as the facelifted original Genesis large sedan will be called) and G90 limousine, and most likely will feature the same eight-speed automatic transmission.
Available engines could include Hyundai's 3.3-litre turbo V6 (272kW/510Nm), 3.8-litre non-turbo V6 (231kW/397Nm) and even its 5.0-litre V8 (312kW/520Nm).
Hyundai has previously stated that its Genesis luxury cars will be the "world's best" prestige cars, designed and engineered to beat the Germans like Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
How will the company achieve this?
It won't be easy starting a fresh brand while its rivals have decades and even centuries of brand value behind them, but it plans to target refinement, luxury and technology – lots of technology.
The new model is expected to be offered with health-inducing system such as a clinically-validated smart posture caring or SPC system, which automatically adjusts seat and steering wheel to ensure optimum alertness and posture.
Other features are likely to include a fully digitised dashboard, semi-autonomous drive assistants (self steering, acceleration, braking etc), along with the usuals such as blind spot and pedestrian detection systems.
"The New York Concept is a progressive concept car that showcases the design quality of the brand," said Manfred Fitzgerald, head of GENESIS brand.
"With its expressive volumes and refined design, the New York Concept truly embodies the athletic elegance, which characterizes GENESIS products," he said.
The Genesis New York Concept will be unveiled on March 23 (March 24 Australian time) at the New York show.
