NEW YORK MOTOR SHOW: Golden anniversary Nissan 370Z unveiled

Special livery for Nissan sports car to celebrate 50 years of Zeds

Nissan will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the launch of its Z sports car range with a limited-edition MY2020 variant of the 370Z.

Unveiled on the eve of the 2019 New York Auto Show, the Special 50th Anniversary Edition 370Z is “inspired” by the 240Zs campaigned in US racing by Brock Racing Enterprises.

Now, before you ask; no, there is no relation to Aussie racing legend, Peter Brock. But that hasn’t stopped Nissan Australia from taking the decision to add the Nissan 370Z 50th Anniversary Edition to its local line-up in the second half of 2019.

New York was the launch pad for the Datsun 240Z.

In October 1969, the then struggling Japanese company debuted the Fairlady Z to US dealers and auto and general media alike at the Pierre Hotel near Central Park.

An instant hit, the 240Z changed the face of Datsun (and eventually Nissan) in the USA. The car did much the same Down Under, when it debuted to be sold alongside the legendary Datsun 1600 sedan.

In its current form the Nissan 370Z debuted Down Under in 2009. Only a handful of tweaks have been applied to the car since.

Says Nissan USA: “The Special 50th Anniversary Edition 370Z pays homage to the #46 BRE (Brock Racing Enterprises) Datsun 240Z that won multiple SCCA National Championships with John Morton behind the wheel.”

The 50th Anniversary model is based on the US-market mid-grade 370Z Sport. It’s not clear where the model will land in Nissan Australia’s truncated 370Z line-up. The range-topping 370Z NISMO is expected to still be offered.

The only mechanical change apparent on the New York commemorative car are redesigned 19-inch RAYS alloy wheels. The car is otherwise distinguished by bold BRE-style graphics and 50th Anniversary identification on the front and rear.

Two different paint schemes will be offered -- white with red accents and silver with black accents.

Inside, unique features include an Alcantara-wrapped “50th Anniversary” steering wheel and embossed seats.

The 370Z’s 3.7-litre atmo petrol V6 engine is unchanged.

Auto and six-speed manual gearboxes (the latter with auto rev-matching) will be offered – at least in the US market.
