NEW YORK MOTOR SHOW: Top five pick-up trucks
Aussies love utes, but Americans are fanatical about bigger, badder pick-up trucks…If you love utes, you probably don't need an introduction to America's big, brutish pick-up trucks, some of which would be too wide to fit on some of our Aussie roads.
But for those who don't know, the US market considers our utes to be 'mid-size', while their big bruisers are 'full-size' trucks. They're longer, wider, taller and have a bigger tray (excuse me, bed…).
Some say the idea behind the big full-size US utes is that they can carry a 4x8ft sheet of plywood in the tub.
In Australia utes account for a huge proportion of overall annual vehicle sales, with the category accounting for roughly one in six new car sales.
In the USA, pickup trucks make up around one in eight of the US market's total annual sales. However, consider that around 18 million cars are sold per annum in the USA, compared to Australia's 1.3 million, and you can see why these pick-ups are so important.
