NEW YORK MOTOR SHOW: Toyota teases next RAV4

Japanese car-maker confirms it will reveal next-gen medium SUV late this month at US show

Toyota has confirmed it will unveil its all-new, fifth-generation RAV4 at the New York motor show on Wednesday, March 28.

It released a single darkened side-profile image along with the announcement, but the shadowy teaser shot doesn't reveal much other than confirming the Japanese car-maker's latest rival for Mazda CX-5 is set to get a lot sleeker.

Set to be heavily inspired by the FT-AC concept that was revealed at last November's LA motor show, the next RAV's rounder shape should borrow some of the show car's added toughness.

From earlier spy shots, it appears this will include a more angular nose, squared-off wheel-arches and, in general, more of the butch styling elements you might expect from a rival Jeep product.

Beneath its skin, the latest RAV4 will be based on the company's latest Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform that is shared with both the new Camry, C-HR SUV and upcoming Corolla.

The TNGA underpinnings should make the new RAV4 considerably better to drive than the SUV it replaces.

Under the bonnet, the new RAV4 range should be petrol only, following the Japanese car-maker's decision to abandon diesel for its passenger models.

A hybrid version is also certain -- including in Australia for the first time -- with the next RAV4 likely to become available with both regular hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains based on those in the Prius.

It's not yet clear if Toyota will offer both versions in Australia, where it has committed to selling eight hybrid models by 2025.

Set to again be available with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, the new Toyota SUV will come with the car-maker's latest active safety tech and semi-autonomous cruise control.

Inside, there will be a comprehensive update of the current car's infotainment system, which is likely to bring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring.

Likely to go on sale in the US and Europe shortly after its New York show debut, the 2019 RAV4 is not due for Australian release until early next year.
