MG has finally announced the pricing and specification of its eagerly anticipated U9 dual-cab ute, with the entry-level Explore kicking off from just $52,990 driveaway; significantly undercutting the related LDV Terron 9, as well as its own previous price guide.
Standard to all U9 variants is a 12.3-inch central touchscreen butted to a matching digital instrument cluster, power-adjustable driver’s seat, keyless entry and start, digital radio, wireless connection to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a mix of USB-A and USB-C sockets.
Standard practical features include LED exterior lighting, spray-in tub liner, side steps, roof rails, a full-size spare wheel and tyre, plus and 12-volt power socket.
The base Explore rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and gets disc brakes all round, switchable 4x4, double wishbone front suspension, off-road driving modes, an 80-litre fuel tank, a ‘microfibre leather’ steering wheel and synthetic leather upholstery.
Stepping up to the Explore X adds 19-inch wheels, more sophisticated LED headlights, LED tub lighting, heated front seats, acoustically insulated windscreen, wireless device charging, voice control functions, sat-nav and over-the-air updates.
At the top of the pack, the Explore Pro adds a front differential lock, 20-inch alloy wheels, multi-colour ambient lighting, a digital rearview mirror, eight-speaker JBL sound system, black exterior highlights, a panoramic sunroof, heated second row, power-adjustable passenger’s seat and leather upholstery throughout.
Safety is well represented for all variants, with headline inclusions comprising AEB, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assistance, blind-spot detection, driver fatigue monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, two Isofix child seat anchors with top tethers, and curtain airbags for both rows of seating.
A 360-degree camera is offered on the two higher grades, though on the flagship gets a high-definition unit.
Speaking of, the innovative split tailgate detailed previously will only be available – for now – on the Explore Pro, while the ‘electronic foldable rear access panel’ that extends the effective tub length is a flagship-only, $5500 optional extra.
All versions are powered by a turbocharged 2.5-litre diesel engine developing 160kW/520Nm and paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is a claimed 7.9 litres per 100km.
Despite its coil-sprung rear axle, the U9 can still tow the industry standard maximum 3500kg, although the payload is a relatively low 870kg for the base model and drops to 835kg for the mid-range U9 or 770kg for the Pro.
The 2025 MG U9 is on the larger end of the traditional dual-cab scale, measuring 5.5m in length and contributing to a turning circle of 13.3 metres.
Its tray is similarly large with a width of up to 1600mm (or 1230mm between the wheel-arch intrusions), and 1600mm in length - not including the extra liberated space once the mid-gate is opened.
MG will be hoping the U9 finds its feet with local ute buyers as quickly as possible to help it continue its run up the sales charts.
How much does the 2025 MG U9 cost?
Explore – $52,990
Explore X – $55,990
Explore Pro – $60,990
