A drop-top version of Chevrolet’s seventh-generation Corvette has emerged on the internet just days after the all-new American super-coupe made its world debut at the Detroit motor show on Monday. These front and rear images of the topless C7 Corvette first appeared on The Auto Insider website, which stated they were not renderings, leading to speculation they could be images of a scale model produced by Maisto, whose corporate website had briefly posted the same images.
A Chevrolet spokesman has told Jalopnik the images were “not” photos of the new Corvette Convertible, which will not enter production until after the C7 coupe in 2014.
Either way, we believe the images provide a good indication of what the 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible will look like, given it appears identical to the coupe except for a few minor details.
They include smaller 18/19-inch wheels and the lack of a rear spoiler, red brake callipers and front wing logos, while the fitment of a ‘GM Design Center’ number plate adds weight to its authenticity.
Neither image shows the drop-top Corvette with its roof in place, but the convertible is likely to feature a fabric soft top like its C6 predecessor, rather than a heavier and more expensive folding hard-top.
While the new Corvette coupe will come with a removable targa top, if these images are of the production convertible then the bracing structure that supports it and provides rollover protection behind the rear seats will be removed to produce the sleek roofless version.
