Next-gen Apple CarPlay to be smarter than ever with driver display integration

More features, clever tech, and a fresh look for the next iteration of Apple’s smartphone mirroring system is set to take over your next car.

The next generation of Apple CarPlay has been revealed this week, with the tech giant previewing the heavily-revised system at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) hosted in California.

Set to be ‘integrated deeper’ into the hardware of new cars, a host of cool features will be unlocked for the latest version of the Carplay system which will include the ability to display content on multiple screens, including the driver’s instrument cluster. Apple acknowledged that new and emerging car design is moving towards a multi-screen experience so they are taking advantage of the extra real estate.

According to Apple, deeper integration with the vehicle will allow users to do things like control the radio or change the climate directly through CarPlay and Siri voice commands, and “using the vehicle data, CarPlay will seamlessly render the speed, fuel level, temperature, and more, on the instrument cluster”.

You’ll also be able to customise gauge designs and display widgets (small graphic icons that display information) on other screens within the cabin, so “users will have at-a-glance information from Weather and Music right on their car’s dashboard”.

Apple is yet to reveal any more information on the new tech, including its release date, promising to reveal the vehicles set to feature the new tech in late 2023.

Initial car manufacturers set to adopt the new tech include Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault and Volvo. More brands are expected to follow once the rollout begins.

This is the closest Apple has got to a car experience to date, with many rumours circulating over the years on the possibility of a full-scale Apple car hitting roads worldwide.
