It doesn’t officially have a name yet and there won’t be a V8 under the bonnet, but this is what the next sporty Holden Commodore will look like.
Images of the upcoming Buick Regal GS – itself a twin of the 2018 Opel Insignia/Holden Commodore – have been leaked by a Chinese website.
The photos reveal some of the styling details we can expect in the SS or more likely VXR Commodore: larger air intakes, more aggressive wheels and purposeful aesthetics. Keen observers may also spot what looks to be Brembo brake calipers hidden behind its five-spoke alloy wheels.
Production of the 2018 Commodore/Insignia began in Europe last month. It has been promised in regular sedan and wagon forms, plus a high-riding ‘Tourer’ and a sporty derivative.
Like the V6 sedan and wagon, the Tourer crossover and sporty flagship will be powered by a 230kW/370Nm 3.0-litre petrol V6, driving GM Opel’s new ‘Twinster’ AWD system via a nine-speed automatic transmission. A low 6sec 0-100km/h time is being speculated.
Models further down the food chain will be powered by four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine.
Opel engineers and designers are adamant there is not enough space under the bonnet to fit a twin-turbocharged V6 in the sporty version. As reported by motoring.com.au, Holden and HSV experimented in Australia with making such an engine fit but gave the task away as too complex and expensive to justify.
