Polestar has confirmed its oldest ongoing model, the Polestar 2, will evolve into a new generation. But it’s going to be positively ancient by the time the replacement arrives no sooner than 2028.
At one stage the Polestar 2 was expected to be replaced in the line-up by the Polestar 7 compact SUV.
At another point, it was allegedly going to be renewed and renamed the Polestar 8.
But Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller says the Polestar 2 will continue on into a new generation under its current name.
And he made it clear, with 180,000 examples already sold, it was not likely to deviate too far from its current five-door fastback passenger car concept.
“I want to have those current Polestar 2 customers back,” said Lohscheller, speaking at the launch of the new Polestar 5.
“I want to have those [Polestar 2 customers], right? Because we build it up. I think we did a great job. And I want to keep them in the family.”
The Polestar 7, which will be built on a Volvo platform in a new Volvo plant in Slovakia, will be the next all-new model from the Chinese-Swedish premium brand in early 2028.
The renewed Polestar 2 is likely to follow after the 7, meaning it would appear in 2028 at the earliest.
That’s eight years after it first began production and six years after it went on sale in Australia.
It could be pushed back even further if Polestar decides to build the high-cost low-volume Polestar 6 – originally due to appear in 2026 – ahead of it.
But that seems unlikely.
That’s because Lohscheller’s focus has to be on maximum sales and profits, as Polestar continues to struggle to stop the flow of red ink and break into the black, and 2 and 7 are where he’s pinning his hopes when it comes to sales.
Having figured out the Polestar 2 is being kept in the line-up, Polestar has to figure out how to keep people buying it until the replacement eventually arrives.
There have been regular technical updates – in 2023 the single-motor even flipped from front- to rear-wheel drive – and another arrives before the end of the year.
Maybe the BST performance derivative could become a permanent part of the line-up and make it to Australia for the first time.
