Next-gen VW Phaeton will be a plug-in hybrid

Success in US and China means Volkswagen’s luxury limo will come with state-of-the-art hybrid tech

It has been revealed that the next-generation Volkswagen Phaeton will come with an all-new plug-in hybrid powertrain that could see the VW limo produce as much as 300kW but average just 1.5l/100km and emit less than 50g/km of CO2.

The revelation that the second-generation Phaeton will come with the plug-in hybrid tech from its launch in early 2016 was made by German newswire, www.automobilwoche.de, after speaking to a VW insider.

According to the VW source, the future Phaeton has been created to rival the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, while Audi’s next A8 -- which shares the same platform, engines and plug-in hybrid tech -- has been created to be more overtly sporting and a more natural rival for the BMW 7 Series.

Both will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform that was first used to underpin the recently launched Audi Q7. Like the Q7, both the next Phaeton and A8 will come with a longitudinally-mounted front engine and all-wheel drive. Four-wheel steering will also be an option, helping boost both big car’s agility.

The new MLB Evo platform will also be used on the A4 and A6 sedans and the next Volkswagen Touareg, according to the insider.
