Fresh unofficial renders showing how the next-generation Honda Civic Type R hot hatch could shape-up have hit the internet this week and it’s a slightly more palatable design than we’re used to.
That’ll be good news for those who found the outlandish design of the outgoing Type R a little too polarising, even if it remains the world’s best front-drive performance car.
If these new renders from KDesign are anything to go by, Honda’s hot hatch hero will bring a slightly more toned-down design this time around.
Honda has confirmed an all-new Civic Type R is in the works and will be released in 2022, based on the more conservative new-generation Civic hatch that was revealed last week and is set to arrive in Australia in late 2021,
The Japanese car-maker is yet to confirm whether the new Type R will carry over the current model’s 228kW/400Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, but there are rumours an electrified hybrid version of the same high-revving VTEC engine could bring even more power.
Other trademark features likely to be continued are the R’s six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive layout.
A massive rear wing will almost certainly be carried over too, while computer-generated versions of the MY22 Type R suggest aggressive bumpers, side skirts and a triple-outlet exhaust system will also be grace the new model.
As we’ve reported, the MY21 Civic Type R is no longer available to order in Australia, but there are still several examples of the hot hatch up for sale at carsales.
Stay tuned for the global reveal of the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Type R later this year.
