The first official teaser of the all-new Skoda Fabia has been released, giving us our first look at the Czech car-maker's Volkswagen Polo or Mazda2 rival.
The darkened image doesn't actually reveal that much, but early spy shots have already shown that the new-generation Fabia will fall in line with the rest of the Skoda range, with the light hatch set to borrow heavily from the latest Scala and come with a larger front grille.
The big news lies beneath the skin as the Skoda Fabia finally migrates to Volkswagen Group's MQB A0 architecture which should bring significant gains in ride, handling, refinement and technology.
Inside, the cabin will feature Volkswagen's latest MIB 3.0 infotainment system that will be operated through either a 9.2-inch or larger 10.25-inch touch-screen.
As well as bringing extra rigidity and weight savings over the old platform, the new MQB architecture should also liberate more space.
Longer, wider and taller, the new Skoda Fabia will have a longer wheelbase for extra legroom, while its luggage-swallowing capacity should grow to around 380 litres – 50 litres more than the current car.
Under the bonnet, the engine range will be dominated by the same powertrains you'll find in the closely-related Volkswagen Polo, with a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder TSI petrol set to be offered in varying power outputs.
Initially, it's unlikely any will feature electrification, with 12-volt mild-hybrid powertrains set to be introduced later.
From launch, both manual and (seven-speed) dual-clutch transmissions will be available, although the latter will dominate Australian sales.
Set to be introduced in Europe later this year, Australia might have to wait until 2022 before deliveries of the all-new Fabia arrive.
When it does, pricing should kick off from around the same $18,500 mark as the current range.
