Next Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell concept surfaces

Gawky hydrogen-powered Toyota morphs into handsome sedan with 30 per cent more driving range

A stylish next-generation Toyota Mirai Concept has been locked in for the 2019 Tokyo motor show.

Powered once again by an advanced hydrogen-powered fuel cell, the concept that will unwrapped at the Japanese show is said to be "a final-stage development model of the second-generation Mirai," suggesting the car revealed will be close-to-production.

It also means the controversial lift-back design could be relegated to the scrap heap.

Claimed to have been developed to offer buyers both improved performance and 30 per cent more range, the next-gen Mirai will be capable of covering 650km between refills – 150km more than the old car.Based on the car-maker's current TNGA platform, the next Mirai takes a huge leap forward in the design stakes, with swoopier coupe-like.

Measuring in 4935mm long, 1885mm wide with a wheelbase of 2920mm, the new Toyota architecture is said to come with increased rigidity and a lower centre of gravity, hinting at better dynamics.

Inside, the redesigned Mirai gets a huge 12.3-inch central touchscreen, a full digital instrument panel and five seats – one more than the last car's four seats thanks to the better packaging of the fuel cell.

Despite releasing full pics, Toyota has not revealed full technical specifications for the second-gen Mirai's powertrain. However the Japanese car-making giant promises the hydrogen-powered sedan will be better to drive, with smoother more linear throttle response thanks to its improved powertrain.

Stay tuned, because full details of the Mirai will be released on October 23 following its full reveal at the Tokyo show.
