It hasn’t taken long for some excellent new renders of the next-generation Toyota Tundra to emerge, following leaked blurry images of the full-size pick-up that were allegedly taken at a dealer event in the US.
The leaked images appeared just as our spy photographers also provided our first glimpse of a camouflaged test mule of the new RAM 1500-rivalling Tundra roaming US streets.
Putting them all together, the designers at Carsbite have provided the best look yet at just how the all-new Toyota Tundra – which is firmly on the agenda for sale in Australia – is taking shape.
These include key design elements such as the big grille with thick horizontal bars, T-shaped (on its side) daytime running lights, a slim tail-light design, side-exit exhaust pipes and large alloy wheels.
Our spy photographs from earlier this week pictured the Tundra with particularly heavy camouflage designed to obscure the rear suspension, indicating some major changes taking place at the rear axle – potentially a move from leaf to coil springs in similar fashion to the RAM 1500.
It also prompted one of our readers to describe the test mule as “the new Tundra Streetsweeper”!
Due to launch in North America late in 2021, the new Tundra will be built on Toyota’s latest ladder-frame chassis underpinnings, known as the TNGA-F or F1 platform.
The same underpinnings will be used on the incoming Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series and Prado, as well as the next-generation Toyota HiLux (due 2024).
The current Tundra is powered by a 5.7-litre V8 petrol engine, but the next generation could include an all-new turbocharged V6.
A new hybrid powertrain is also understood to be in the works.
