•28 Jan 2026Jaecoo is about to double-down on its model range with the imminent arrival of its new J5 compact SUV.
Sitting underneath, but definitely following in the wheeltracks of, the stylish J7 that launched Chery’s premium and adventurous sub-brand earlier this year, the Jaecoo J5 brings a unique choice to the popular compact SUV segment that builds on the company’s ethos of offering new technologies at affordable prices.
So, here’s nine cool features about the new Jaecoo J5 EV.

The Jaecoo J5 EV is now available in Australian showrooms with the , hybrid and petrol powertrains to arrive early 2026.
It comes with a host of distinctive exterior design elements that highlight its battery-powered underpinnings, including a totally unique front-end with slimline LED headlights and an exclusive front bumper with active aerodynamics.
What that means is there is a flap in the lower grille section that opens when the battery needs additional air for cooling but closes at cruising speeds to reduce drag and increase driving range. Clever!
It also features wind-cheating 18-inch alloy wheels that are fitted with high quality and low rolling-resistance Continental tyres that both contribute to improving efficiency and eliminating range anxiety.
Otherwise, all three variants of the Jaecoo J5 bring a classy, European-influenced design to the compact SUV segment with signature cues like the floating roofline with integrated roof rails, slim rear LED lights and clean side profile.

Being a size smaller than the Jaecoo J7, the J5 fits into the compact SUV segment against the likes of the Hyundai KONA, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Qashqai.
But open the doors, and its amazingly spacious cabin almost contradicts its diminutive dimensions.
There is ample space for five with generous headroom across both rows and a commanding view of the road ahead through its expansive glasshouse for those in the front.
The cabin is also bathed in light through the large panoramic sunroof, which amplifies the sense of space inside the cabin.
Back seat passengers are treated to acres of space with plenty of legroom, as well as a rear air vent and USB power outlet on the rear of the centre console, and decent-sized door pockets large enough to carry a water bottle.
In fact, there are more than 25 different smart storage spaces throughout the cabin, and the boot is genuinely huge with 480L of cargo carrying capacity – more than some mid-sized SUVs

There is one thing that truly sets the Jaecoo J5 apart from any other car, and that is the fact it has been designed to be the world’s first pet-friendly vehicle.
Inspired by a chance interaction with a prospective customer in Poland that was looking to upgrade their vehicle to one more suitable for their large dog, Jaecoo’s brand CEO Shawn Xu instructed his design team to make the J5 meet this need.
And they did, with a new silicone-based seat trim material that is resistant to scratches, odours, stains and bacteria, which not only makes it more durable but also easier to keep clean.
Building on that, Jaecoo has also created a catalogue of pet-friendly accessories for the J5 such as a specific carrier that slots into the boot perfectly, a pet mat or a rear divider for the cargo area, collars, leashes and drinking bowls specifically designed for the car. There’s even a scratching board for cats.
To prove its merits, the Jaecoo J5 received certification as the world’s first pet-friendly car from the German transport authority, TUV Sud.

But the J5 is not just convenient for pet owners as it comes loaded with the latest in digital technologies.
Its minimalist dashboard design is contrasted by a twin digital screen set-up that pairs an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the driver with a large, portrait-oriented 13.2-inch infotainment touch screen in middle of the dash.
Cleverly positioned on an angle that flows up from the centre console, the screen houses all the vehicle functions in a logical operating system with easy-to-read phone-style widgets for all of its functions, including dual-zone climate control, , Bluetooth connectivity, and wireless smartphone mirroring for Apple and Android devices.

There is even an option to include an in-built Karaoke function, which is fun for the whole family.
This comes with a pair of wireless microphones that automatically sync to the audio system with a variety of different voice filters so passengers can sing along to their favourite tunes while driving.
As we’ve mentioned, the Jaecoo J5 will be available with a choice of three powertrain options, starting with the flagship BEV model we’re looking at here.
It features a single electric motor driving the front wheels via a single-speed reduction gear transmission and generates 155kW of power and 288Nm of torque – figures that are equivalent to some of the sportiest compact SUV rivals.
Jaecoo claims it can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.7 seconds, which provides plenty of overtaking power on the highway.

More importantly, the Jaecoo J5 features a 58.9kWh battery pack that delivers more than 400km of driving on a single charge and takes less than half an hour (28 minutes) to recharge between 30-80 percent on an 130kW DC fast charger.
While that makes it convenient for city commuters who will probably only need to replenish the battery once a week, it also means J5 owners can comfortably explore beyond the city limits on the weekend as well.
For that, the J5 has a towing capacity of 750kg which is enough to haul a small trailer loading up with camping gear. Which is another area that Jaecoo has developed a catalogue of accessories for, including roof pods, bike racks and more.

No matter where you drive the Jaecoo J5, knowing it is fitted with a comprehensive suite of the latest crash avoidance systems and driver aids is a great comfort.
Included among the array of functions is autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, speed sign recognition, rear cross traffic alert and driver attention monitoring.
Plus, it has a total of eight airbags.

As a new brand, Jaecoo offers customers an unparalleled element of trust with excellent long-term ownership credentials.
The J5 is covered by an eight-year factory warranty with unlimited kilometres, including the battery pack and electric motor, with roadside assistance and capped price servicing for the same period.
Dubbed the ‘quadruple 8 assurance program’, this provides owners with the utmost confidences in their vehicles and ensures adventure never has to pause.
Jaecoo is currently running a special offer to the first 2000 J5 customers, which includes a limited driveaway price of $36,990 and free premium paint. Demonstration vehicles are available now. So, head to your nearest Jaecoo dealer to arrange a test drive today.
The EV will also be joined by a petrol and hybrid version of the J5 in Q2 2026.
