Nissan has released a largely pointless teaser video of its wildest ever production supercar, the GT-R Nismo, ahead of its world debut at next week’s Tokyo motor show.
Although the GT-R Nismo does not make an appearance in the video, its title – #zerocompetition – suggests Nissan is targeting a new Nurburgring lap record.
To do so, the GT-R Nismo will have to beat the 6:57 lap time set by the Porsche 918 Spyder, which would make it about 27 seconds quicker than the standard GT-R (7:24).
“Somewhere in the world, speed just got a new look,” said Nissan via its YouTube channel. “Raw speed, raw power, #zerocompetition. Something big is coming.”
No official details have been revealed for the first GT-R Nismo, which has been spotted in testing at the Nurburgring.
No technical details have been revealed, but it’s likely the current R35 GT-R’s 404kW/628Nm 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 will be warmed over to eke out at least 425kW and 650Nm.
According to some UK reports, this will yield a 0-100km/h sprint as rapid as 2.1 seconds, thanks partly to weight-saving measures to reduce the GT-R’s near-1800kg girth.
The standard GT-R is already one of the world's quickest supercars, with a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 2.7 seconds. On paper, that makes it quicker than Porsche's 911 Turbo S (3.1 seconds), but not the Bugatti Veyron (2.5 seconds).
The GT-R Nismo is expected to go on sale in Australia alongside a range of Nismo-fettled Nissan models next year, including the JUKE and 370Z, before an all-new Nismo-developed GT-R appears in 2016.
