Nissan has been informed of a fault in certain Dualis SUVs, for those built between February 2012 and September 2012, that can result in the steering wheel 'boss' detaching from the steering column.
A total of 6615 Nissan Dualis and Dualis+2 models built in 2012 are affected by the recall, and it's not the first time the car has been recalled for this issue. Initial responses to the problem occurred in 2012, when Nissan Australia
announced the first recall, but "after new information from the component
supplier indicated a larger number of potentially affected vehicles"
this new recall has been issued.
Nissan Australia says there have been no reports of the potential fault in Australia.
According to the recall notice, the steering wheel 'boss', which connects to the steering column "may not have the appropriate strength".
"If a load is applied to the steering wheel which is higher than the load applied during normal steering operation, the boss may separate from the steering column."
It's not clear whether this can result in the steering wheel completely detaching, but the ACCC advises that "If the defect occurs, this will result in loss of steering control, posing an accident hazard".
The recall affects 2012 model year Dualis vehicles nationally, and Nissan says that owners will be contacted and then advised to book an appointment with their nearest Nissan dealer to have the steering column inspected and possibly replaced.
All work relating to the steering is carried out at no cost to owners, says Nissan. Owners can also call 1800 988 334 to talk to the Nissan Australia customer assistance centre if they have any queries.
