Nissan has developed a world-first self-cleaning paint technology that it claims will put an end to one of car ownership’s greatest chores.
Unveiled in prototype form on a Nissan Note hatchback, the new super-hydrophobic and oleophobic paintwork is claimed to repel rain, mud and common road grime.
Nissan says the Ultra-Ever Dry technology, demonstrated in a YouTube video that has attracted almost 2.3 million views since last Thursday (April 24), is now being trialed for potential aftermarket use.
Unlike the 'self-cleaning' coating Nissan previously trialed on its reversing camera lenses, which employed water and compressed air to remove dirt, the new technology creates a protective layer of air between the paint and the environment.
Nissan claims the paint prevents dirty marks from clinging to the car and says it will test the Note in a variety of conditions over coming months before deciding whether to make it an aftermarket option for its cars.
