Nissan JUKE Rally Tribute Concept breaks cover

Special JUKE created to pay homage to Japanese car-maker's famous 240Z East Africa rally win

Nissan has shown off a rally-ready version of the Nissan JUKE that commemorates the 240Z East Africa Rally win 50 years ago.

Drawing direct inspiration from the winning Datsun 240Z, the 2021 Nissan JUKE Rally Tribute boasts a retro red exterior paint colour and black bonnet that encloses a pair of driving lamps.

Larger wheel-arches and off-road race wheels and tyres complete the exterior upgrades.

For now, the JUKE Rally Tribute remains a digital rendering, but if the Japanese car-maker decides to produce it, the harder-charging SUV will come powered by an uprated hybrid powertrain.

No power or torque figures have been released.

The famous 1971 victory in the East African Safari Rally, which was run across Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika (the mainland part of Tanzania today), occurred with racer Edgar Herrmann behind the wheel and with Hans Schülle in charge of navigation.

The Nissan duo beat teams rallying Porsche 911s, Peugeot 504s, Ford Escort Twin Cams and even a Range Rover.

Famed for its toughness and speed, thanks to its 154kW 2.4-litre inline six-cylinder engine, the 240Z lapped up the hot, dusty conditions of the Safari rally.

"The Juke Rally Tribute concept celebrates an iconic moment in Nissan’s heritage, with the participation and victory of the legendary 240Z in the East African Rally in 1971,” said Coralie Musy, vice-president of Nissan’s brand.

"As well as celebrating that victory, it reflects Nissan’s pioneering history in crossovers, striking design and electrified powertrains.

"We're delighted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the victory of that remarkable achievement with these striking images."
