The Nissan Magnite has been officially revealed, boasting a modern exterior design, a pair of frugal 1.0-litre petrol engines and in-demand equipment such as wireless phone charging and a 360-degree parking camera.
However, the all-new compact SUV is designed and developed to meet the requirements of emerging markets such as India, meaning it is unlikely to meet Australian safety standards.
The Nissan Magnite only comes with dual front airbags and does without autonomous emergency braking (AEB), for example.
The Nissan JUKE will remain the Japanese brand's compact SUV offering in Australia, but the car-maker hasn’t given up on other compact cars, such as the Nissan Micra and Note, which could also come Down Under at some stage.
The Magnite name is a combination of ‘magnetic’ and ‘ignite’.
The four-metre-long compact crossover is powered by 1.0-litre turbo (71kW) and non-turbo (54kW) engines that drive through either a five-speed manual gearbox or CVT automatic transmission.
The front-end features LED bi-projector headlights and LED ‘lightsaber-style’ turn indicators, along with LED daytime running lights and LED fog lights.
The Magnite is available with an impressive array of cabin equipment, including 360-degree surround-view cameras, an 8.0-inch touch-screen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control and even a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster.
A tech pack adds a Harman Kardon sound system, ambient interior lighting, air purifier, puddle lights and a wireless phone charger.
There’s 336 litres of cargo space behind the folding rear seats and the roof rails have a 50kg load bearing.
The Nissan Magnite goes on sale in India early in 2021.
