Navara poses "unacceptably high risk" of fatal injury: ENCAPThe Nissan Navara, one of Australia's most popular four-wheel drives, has been panned in a five-star safety review in which it was awarded just half a star.
The vehicle was found to pose an "unacceptably high" risk of fatal damage to the head or neck during a front-on collision, during testing by the European New Car Assessment Program (ENCAP).
It also offered weak protection for the chest and legs during the testing, which simulated a smash at 64km/h.
Complaints also included "the Navara's passenger compartment became unstable" and "the airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners were triggered late in the impact", according to a News Limited report.
Nissan Australia says the model, of which more than 18,000 were purchased last year, would remain on sale while the car maker worked on fixes for the problems.
"It still meets all regulatory obligations required of it," Nissan Australia spokesman Jeff Fisher says.
"We'll begin contacting customers in March to take Navaras back into dealerships to have an upgrade to the airbag software."
Mr Fisher said the vehicle would be retested by ENCAP after the software upgrade was complete.
The Navara is second only in four-wheel drive sales in Australia behind the Toyota HiLux.
