Spy pics circulating on the Internet suggests a new Patrol could be on the way for Nissan.
Not before time -- the current GU IV model can be traced back to 1998 -- the blurry pic shown here shows a thoroughly contemporary large 4WD that would sit comfortably alongside the 200 series Toyota LandCruiser.
The style shows an immediate connection with present-day Nissan 4WDs such as the Pathfinder/Navara, and even the X-Trail/Dualis, although the underpinnings could be expected to basically replicate those of the current vehicle. That is, coil-sprung live axles front and rear, and a part-time, dual-range 4WD drivetrain.
It's long been accepted that the Patrol's main stumbling block is in the engine department and it is here that some serious corrective work could be expected.
Speculation that more fuel efficient and powerful V6 and V8 powerplants are in the wings does not appear to be unreasonable, particularly given Nissan's expertise in this area -- along with partner Renault.
Word is that Nissan will launch the next Patrol in 2010, although who knows what shape the market for large, consumptive 4WD vehicles will be in by then.
