The wacky concepts are starting to come out of the woodwork as the Tokyo motor show draws ever nearer.
Pictured here is the nutty Pivo 2, which follows in the wake of the equally loony -- yet clever -- Pivo (the white car), which debuted at the Tokyo show two years ago.
As per its predecessor, the Pivo 2 is billed as "an advanced electric concept car" as it draws its power from compact Lithium-ion batteries. Each of the four wheels is powered by Nissan's advanced electric 'In-wheel 3D Motor'.
Pivo 2 also features the same novel rotating cabin as the first edition, which means there's no need for a reverse gear, while the wheels can turn at 90-degree angles, enabling the car to crab sideways out of tight spots.
"Pivo 2 takes the idea of an environmentally friendly electric urban commuter vehicle and delivers fun, functionality and a unique relationship between the car and driver," boasts Nissan.
In addition to its battery-powered drivetrain, the Pivo 2 also dispenses with conventional hardware for braking and steering, as both these systems use 'by-wire' technology.
And Nissan says that -- thanks to the innovative 'Robotic Agent' -- you're never alone in the Pivo 2.
With conversations possible in Japanese and English, the Robotic Agent has been created to work with Pivo 2 to make every journey less stressful, claims Nissan.
It provides a unique interface through which to communicate with Pivo 2 on everything from basic vehicle functions through to the nearest available parking.
Visually, the octopus-on-wheels-resembling Pivo 2 has retained most of the design cues pioneered by the original, but a few tweaks have yielded a sharper-edged passenger cabin (the original Pivo was more like a goldfish bowl), while each of the wheels is now housed in individual pods.
Pivo 2 will make its first public appearance at the Nissan Ginza Gallery in Tokyo on October 13, and a fortnight later it will grace the company's stand at the Tokyo motor show.
It won't be Nissan's only debutant at the show as the carmaker is promising to whip the covers off "four other exciting production and concept vehicles".
