This is the first look at the Nissan Micra, due to hit Australia in 2010. It will spearhead the brand's assault on becoming Australia's leading imported brand by 2012.
The rejuvenated Micra is the first of two critically important new models Nissan Australia is relying on to overhaul Mazda within the next four years to claim the title of this country's best-selling fully imported brand. The second new model will be the replacement for the Tiida hatch, which is rumoured to resurrect the Pulsar name.
Nissan Australia CEO Dan Thompson has made no secret of the company's plans to use the new generation Micra and Tiida/Pulsar to boost its passenger car sales.
Theses two sketches show the Micra will retain its compact dimensions but take on a look more consistent with the recently launched DUALIS.
Very few details were released with the sketches but Nissan did confirm that the car would go into production in Thailand in March next year. It will qualify for the Thai government's 'Eco-car' policy that is aimed at developing more energy efficient vehicles.
With the global launch scheduled for the same time it is expected that the new Micra will arrive in Australia sometime in the second half of 2010.
Unlike the current Micra that is only available in five-door, automatic specification Thompson has also previously confirmed that a full model range -- including three-door and manual options -- will be available with the new generation car.
