Nissan will exhibit several concept cars at the Tokyo motor show this month, such as innovative wild Land Glider , but it also has plans for production vehicles. Enter the cheap and cheerful Roox.
Measuring just 3.39 metres long and 1.47 metres wide, Nissan's 2+2 micro van is best described as ultra-compact and is scheduled to hit the streets of Japan in time for Christmas -- but don't expect it to be released outside of its domestic market.
Nissan says the Roox will "change the face of minicars in Japan" with its "elegant" design. The style is pure Nihon, looking very much like a box with wheels tacked on, but there is more to the Nissan Roox than meets the eye. It features sliding rear doors that can be opened remotely with the key plip which also improve packaging while making the most of interior space.
Like many MPVs and some minicars in Japan, the elderly demographic is an important and rapidly growing market for domestic car makers, and with rear sliding doors on both sides the Roox delivers excellent ingress and egress.
Nissan has divulged the Roox's engine type, but says the vehicle will be a "low mileage car" that is "eligible for the eco-car tax subsidy". Fitted with four airbags, the Roox is likely to enter the market at the budget end of the spectrum.
