Nissan targets lifestyle buyers with new Navara

Nissan has added a new generation dual cab ute to its Navara lineup that will sell alongside the existing models.

Dubbed the D40, the new Spanish-built model shares its underpinnings and engines with the recently released Pathfinder mid-sized SUV and is aimed at the more recreational market while the existing Japanese-sourced D22 model range continues to service those in need of a trades workhorse.

One rear-wheel drive model - which arrives early next year - and two 4WD models will be offered with prices starting at $37,990 for the rear-drive petrol V6 manual.

The two-wheel drive model will be offered in one spec only with a 198kW/385Nm 4.0-litre petrol V6 driving through a six-speed manual gearbox with the optional five-speed tiptronic-style auto adding $2000.

Four-wheel drive models - priced from $38,990 for the V6 manual - are available in RX and ST-X trim levels with a choice of either petrol or torquey 128kW/403Nm 2.5-litre four cylinder turbo diesel engines and six-speed manual or five-speed auto transmissions. The diesel auto ST-X tops the price list at $47,990.

Like the Pathfinder, the D40 Navara sits on a full ladder frame chassis with double wishbone independent front suspension and for a good weight capacity in the load box, a rear leaf sprung rigid axle.

The four wheel drive system is the same as that on the existing D22 models being a part time mechanical system that offers 2WD (100 per cent to the rear), high range four wheel drive (50/50 split front to rear) and a set of low range ratios and a limited slip diff for serious off-roading. Selections are made via a rotary switch on the dash.

Inside, the D40 is substantially bigger than its D22 kin and offers seating for five with a three-person rear bench seat that is split 60/40 to offer more interior cargo space.

The rear tray has a length of just over 1.5m and is 1130mm between the wheel arches.

The base level RX models come standard with air conditioning, remote locking, and CD audio while the up-spec ST-X adds power windows and mirrors, cruise control, 16-inch alloy wheels, a six stack CD, dual front airbags and ABS.

The ST-X model is also available with a factory fitted C-Channel track system for the load tray which incorporates five rails into which self locking cleats can be fitted for tie down points.
