A 9kW power increase doesn't sound much, but in an engine that compares with one that musters just 57kW of power, the improvement can be dramatic.
Such is the case with the Citroen Berlingo, now enhanced with the same 1.6-litre turbodiesel fitted to the C3 HDI (more here). The new engine lifts the Berlingo's top speed from 148km/h (for the 1.4-litre petrol variant) to 160km/h and the acceleration time from a standing start to 100km/h is reduced from 17.5 seconds to 12.9.
It's not about the power so much, as the torque. In the C3, the new engine develops 215Nm of torque, as opposed to just 113Nm for the existing 1.4-litre petrol engine in the Berlingo. Despite the improved performance of the turbodiesel Berlingo variant, the fuel consumption measures 5.4L/100km, versus 7.5L/100km for the petrol Berlingo.
That respectable performance comes at a price: $21,990.
