Bugatti will resist pressure to downsize and keep its incredible 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 in production for the rest of this decade.
Originally it was thought the unique W16, which produces a herculean 1103kW and 1600Nm of torque in the Chiron, would bow to environmental pressures and be quietly replaced by either a smaller electrified twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 or made redundant altogether by a full pure-electric powertrain.
But that's not the case, with Bugatti boss Stephan Winkelmann telling
that the French brand's hypercars will remain W16-powered.“The W16 has, in my opinion, an opportunity for the future. It’s a USP which is not diminishing in value.
“If it lasts another decade, ICE will be the last of a kind, and the last of a kind means it is collectible.
Helping protect the advanced W16 from being axed, the Bugatti boss says he has backing from Volkswagen Group chairman, Herbert Diess, who "knows the value of a W16 engine".
Winkelmann thinks that in the future, cars powered by internal combustion engines will actually "grow in value."
"People are buying Bugattis because they want to enjoy the ultimate performance but also -- and this is legitimate -- because it’s an investment."
“The EB110 is skyrocketing [in value]. And Veyrons are going up. I don’t have to be a wizard to forecast that this will happen to the Chiron and therefore I’m committing to the fact that this is the way to go for the hyper sportscar in the next decade.”
