There will be no Volkswagen version of the new Ford Everest.
While the next Volkswagen Amarok ute will be based on the new-generation, Aussie-developed Ford Ranger, the co-operation between the two automotive goliaths does not extend to the seven-seat SUV spin-off, which goes on sale here in August.
Volkswagen has been denied access to the Ranger Raptor off-road super-ute despite “many” requests, as we reported here.
But carsales understands the Everest was never pursued by Volkswagen in the same way. Ford sources have confirmed it is out of bounds anyway.
The new Everest follows the latest Ranger onto Ford’s third-generation T6 ladder platform and also adds a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel to its drivetrain armoury, plus a massive upgrade in cabin tech and butch new sheetmetal.
Before the Ford-VW product sharing deal was consummated, Volkswagen confirmed it had been developing a seven-seat ladder-frame diesel SUV based on the first-generation Amarok.
But since then Volkswagen has entered the light and small SUV space with the T-Cross and T-Roc respectively, and nowadays the German car-maker is focussed on road-oriented unitary-body large SUVs such as the long-wheelbase Tiguan Allspace and the Touareg sold in Australia.
The large US-built VW Atlas has long been – and fruitlessly – touted for Australia as well.
Volkswagen also has several electric SUVs in the wings, including the ID.4, ID.5 and ID.6, as well as the ID.Buzz passenger van.
Confirmation of Volkswagen’s local EV launch timing is expected soon. Sister-brand Skoda has already confirmed the Enyaq iV – a close relation of the ID.4 – is coming to Australia.
