Four-wheel drive owners in NSW can now increase their vehicle's ride height by 75mm without certification, following the release of new regulations by NSW Roads, Maritime and Freight Minister Duncan Gay.
Bringing the state into line with Queensland and Victoria, the change in NSW rules was announced in the “Light Vehicle Modifications Manual – Suspension and Ride Height” document released on November 24.
The new ruling allows a vehicle's ride height to be increased over factory settings by 75mm; comprising 50mm suspension lift (already approved in NSW) and a 25mm wheel/tyre height increase without requiring certification.
The 50mm suspension lift without requiring certification became enshrined in federal law last year.
The 25mm addition to ride height via tyre and/or rim size increase equates to a 50mm overall rolling radius increase. With larger-diameter tyres fitted, speedometer and odometer would be incorrect and so modifications would be required to make them read more accurately again.
The NSW change follows Queensland and Victoria, which approved the 25mm tyre lift in addition to a 50mm suspension lift in 2012.
