NSX racer revealed

US Honda arm issues pics of NSX racer

It must be the week for Honda’s NSX to star. Now, the company’s US arm has released the first official pics of the NSX GT3-spec racer as it prepares to hit North American tracks in 2017.

The racer will wear Acura badges (Honda’s premium label in the USA) and, importantly for the Australia GT Championship “is slated for homologation as an FIA GT3 class racecar”, says Honda.

"Building on the very solid foundation of the production NSX, we're making steady progress in our development and looking forward to campaigning the GT3 racecar next year," said Art St Cyr, president of Honda Performance Development via a news release.

The NSX racer dumps the roadcar’s hybrid system and all-wheel drive, instead relying solely on the car’s mid-mounted twin-tubro 3.5-litre V6 and rear drive.

The nine-speed DCT is also replaced in the racer – by a sequential six-speed unit.

Under international GT3 regulations performance of entrants is harmonised using a BoP (Balance of Performance) formula. It’s unclear when and where the NSX will undertake BoP testing. Once homolgated, however, the NSX could race in the local GT series and compete in the Bathurst 12-Hour.

Honda Performance Development (HPD) is developing the GT3 version of the car. HPD and Acura and Honda USA are heavily involved in a range of US motorsport disciplines including the American LeMans series and Pirelli World Challenge.
