Number plate sells for $1.1 million

Two-digit Victorian heritage plate sells at Shannon’s auction for big money

A Victorian heritage number plate has been sold at auction this week for almost double what it was tipped to go for.

Yep, someone paid an eye-watering $1.1 million for the number ‘26’ heritage plate.

According to the Shannons Auctions price guide, it was only supposed to go for $600,000 to $700,000, but instead eventually sold for $1,110,000 – much to the surprise of Christophe Boribon, Shannons national auctions manager.

“I was a little bit surprised when we cracked a million dollars on it, absolutely!” Boribon told radio station 3AW today.

The two-digit plate was reportedly last sold for $70,000 to $80,000 back in 2000.

But, $1.1 million isn’t the most someone has paid for a number plate at auction, said Boribon, with that title belonging to the NSW number ‘4’ plate sold at a Shannons Auction for more than $2 million a few years ago.

Boribon said an FJ Holden with a matching teardrop caravan was also sold last night’s auction for $51,000.
